However the remote operate machine gun is a novelty no other MBT has and will come in handy as a close in anti infantry weapon.Ĥ.Armour: It has the same composite armour as other western tanks accept better due to the fact that it's modular and can be easily upgrade to something better without throwing away the tankĥ.Electronics: It has the best thermal sight. M1A1, if I'm not mistaken, and early marks of Leo 2, not sure on 2A6).ġ.Strategic mobility:It is the lightest in its' cohortsĢ.Tactical mobility: It's fast and agile on the battle fieldģ.Weapons:120mm smooth bore is the best, unfortunately every other westen MBT has it too. Tanks of the last generation generally use x12 power sights (i.e. I'm not entirely clear on the status of the primary optics on different top-end MBTs, but I'm certain the M1A2SEP has the most modern and most capable, being equipped with a x50 power thermal sight which I am rather certain is the most advanced sensor currently attached to an MBT. The information at Army Technology on the LeClerc indicates the commander has independent optics, but is provided with an image intensifier instead of thermals. Still, there appears to be variation in this practice - M1A2 and -A2SEP feature an independent thermal viewer for the commander (and does Chally 2 and latest marks of the Leo 2, if I'm not mistaken). Seperate optics for the track commander generally give top-end designs an enhanced capability compared to earlier designs where the commander relied on a sight extension from the gunner's optics or exposed scanning with binoculars or the naked eye while standing in an open hatch (though there is still a lot to be said for the situational awareness this tactic still provides). An additional issue in the comparison would be target acquisition capability.
